The 86: An update and a stocktake

I haven’t posted for a while. Sorry. But that’s sort of a good thing, because it means I have a lot to update you on.

My order for a white 86 was going nowhere, and I was starting to second guess my colour choice anyway, so when an offer of a black replacement order came up I jumped at it. I signed the paperwork yesterday. It’s a confirmed May build, due in my hands in June.

So with some progress, finally, I was prompted to do a little stocktake today and have a look at what I have ready to go into the car. Remember that this is a car that is destined to be driven. I’m not building something that’ll just be an impractical showpiece like my Silvia, or a caged, stripped out bare bones thing like my AE86. So all these parts are subtle improvements to what I believe is a phenomenal basic package.

You’ve already seen the biggest ticket item on here – the 18×8 +38 & 8.5 +30 Work XSA 02Cs. These should look perfect against the black.

Bringing the wheels and fenders a little closer together will be the RS*R Super Down springs. Should sit the car right on 100mm ground clearance, officer…

I had been considering grabbing the stock GTS touch screen headunit to upgrade the kind of plain looking GT interior until I stumbled upon this little beauty. It plugs straight into the Toyota wiring, is the special Toyota size to fit the dash hole perfectly, and costs less new than the stock unit costs second hand. No brainer.

An audio upgrade is a bit pointless without speakers. The Australian-delivered 86 comes with 6 speaker holes up front and 4 speakers. These Hertz 3-way component speakers will fix that issue, giving much improved sound while still fitting into the stock holes and looking factory. Still to come are some matching 4 inch rears.

Staying in the interior, these were one of the first things I bought. An option in Japan, these door handles will lift the slightly drab GT interior.

Some things are cheap enough that you just grab them because they’re nice to have. I love the 86 logo. Always have. To me it looks like a cartoon race helmet. This piece – individually made to order – sits inside a little storage tray in the centre console and just looks cool.

The GT dash is non-textured and looks plain, so it needed something. Having gone down the carbon wrap route before I know never to do it again, so I got these real carbon overlays. To tie it all together (and cover up the out-of-place silver steering wheel trim) I got the wheel & gearshift trims to match.

Moving to the exterior, I decided the ugly halogen DRLs on the GT weren’t going to cut it so these replacements were snapped up. The housings look completely OEM and the LEDs should just make the front look a little more premium.

The DRLs were necessary because I bought the full light upgrade kit from StreetFX. This gives me HID low beams, LED parkers, LED indicators, LED numberplate and reverse lights, and LED interior lights. So LED everything, basically! I figured if I was going to buy a new car it might as well look like one.

With the colour change the TRD spoiler will have to be painted. Should look great in black though.

This OEM option bumper garnish was bought to black out the centre part of the front lip. Now that the whole car is going to be blacked out this will just add a slightly different contour to the bumper.

Moving under the bonnet (and into the boot), these Tanabe strut braces were interesting to get. Out of stock worldwide when I ordered, there was a 6 week wait on these. It was worth it though – the colour of them is amazing and the build quality is jaw-dropping. All for about $20 per bar more than a generic Chinese made one…

Intake and exhaust are the obvious “non-warranty-voiding” modifications. To match the Tanabe brace and the red interior accents I grabbed an AVO silicone intake pipe, then matched it with an AVO sound tube.

The main piece of the intake puzzle, an APEXi stock-replacement air filter that should be good for a few hp.

As I said, I love the 86 logo. This billet oil cap is pointless but cool.

Speaking of pointless but cool: Greddy genuine carbon fibre bonnet struts will replace the standard bonnet stay.

And finally, the other major item (alongside the wheels) is the Invidia Q300 cat back exhaust. Made from stainless steel with burnt titanium tips, this should give me the perfect combination of legal noise levels, a nice growl, a couple of hp and a classy look.

So that’s where we’re at as of today. There are a few more pieces to buy but the collection is almost complete now. I hope I’ve struck the balance between personalising every area of the car while keeping it subtle and not making it look over-accessorised. Time will tell.
